The third section of my book is entitled: “Foundations.” Paul warns us that each man must be careful about the foundations on which he builds his life. Unfortunately, as my story continues, I will describe how I discovered some pretty faulty foundations. I feared God as a condemning judge: unsympathetic, uncompassionate, unmerciful (except for the most deserving), and I felt that He had abandoned me completely.

God kindly, gently and mercifully revealed Himself to me, walking back all the false theology that had been inadvertently taught to me from childhood. I will eventually tell you what principles He showed me that helped me live with my depression better, but I don’t want to share them yet. You’ll have to wait until Section Four. If I share those principles now, you’ll begin to make a mental checklist of do’s and do nots (as if living with depression is that easy) and try hard to overcome your depression with a brand-new formula. There are NO formulas in living with depression.

This section is very important to grasp theologically before I go on; remember, precept upon precept. If you skip past it, you’ll miss the most important critical truths I have to share. It has everything to do with foundations.

Songs for Reflection

“The songs in this section and in future chapters will be formatted this way: they list the artist from my playlist who sang the song which was meaningful to me in depression (not necessarily the artist who wrote it) followed by the song(s). I am not necessarily endorsing any of these artists nor all their theology in the songs. But these songs helped me live with my depression in a better way by offering me spiritual insights I could grasp. I hope that these will work as spiritual tools for you and be an added spiritual blessing to you.”
